Disc Injury Care in Robina

At Zest Chiropractic, chiropractor Dr Laura Priestley often sees patients for chiropractic care who have herniated and injured discs.

Disc herniation and injuries can be caused in several different ways. It can occur following a traumatic accident, like occurs during snowboarding or wakeboarding. You can also herniate a disc in the gym as well, from lifting heavy weights. Herniations will also occur when there is dysfunction in the spine, which can allow the muscles around this area to weaken.

No matter the cause, the result can be painful and prevent us from achieving our optimal health and wellness. In order to address the pain, chiropractic adjustments work to remove the dysfunction and improve mobility for patients.

Sidelined By Disc Pain? We Can Help!

When we say a disc is herniated or bulging, this term refers to a problem with the rubber-like discs that are stacked between the bones that create your spine.

When the soft, internal part of the disc is displaced through the exterior part of the disc and into the spine, it places additional pressure on nerves where there shouldn’t be any. That irritation of the nerves then causes your symptoms.

Patients who have disc herniation or injuries will experience a variety of symptoms, including a sharp or shooting pain in one part of a leg, in your hips, or in your backside, and while the other areas surrounding the pain will experience numbness. You might also experience numbness throughout one of your calves or in your foot.

It’s important to note that while it’s a common symptom for some patients, sciatica – or that shooting pain down one side of your leg – does not always accompany a disc herniation, nor does having sciatica mean you have a disc herniation.

How Chiropractic Works to Alleviate the Discomfort

Chiropractic adjustments are a holistic way to address the herniated, slipped, or “bulging” disc or discs, realigning the spinal column to take that misplaced pressure off the discs. Dr Laura will also offer suggestions for at-home exercises that will help support the muscles around the area that will also alleviate the pressure on the nerve.

During your appointment, Dr Laura will address the underlying cause of your disc herniation. Please bring any relevant X rays or scans you may have had done within the last 12 months to your first appointment. It will help Dr Laura better understand your total health picture. She’ll be able to determine the severity of your case and give you a better idea of the extent to which chiropractic will help alleviate your pain and discomfort. Zest Chiropractic has X-rays on site if any new radiography is required.

Chiropractic adjustments are not typically painful. The first few adjustments, you may feel mild discomfort, but as the spinal column is adjusted into alignment that will likely decrease.

Stop Suffering Needlessly from Disc Pain

Along with consistent chiropractic care, rest and at-home exercises and stretches, patients can expect some relief nearly immediately, with near-full relief within three or four months. It will depend on the patient’s situation and level of severity.
